The Stratford Tennis Club hosted a men’s and ladies doubles tournament for club members this past weekend. The annual Super Set Doubles event had 24 total teams competing. Teams were guaranteed to play 3 matches in the ‘pro set’ format. The glorious weather and many spectators made this a great day at the Stratford Tennis Club.
The Ladies ‘A’ champions are Johanna Billings and Deb Murphy who took down Gail Shelton and Janet Bradley 8 games to 5 in the final. The Ladies ‘A’ consolation winners are Sandie Ennett and Kaitlyn Mathieson who scored an 8-2 win over sisters Sonja and Alex Andrekovic in the title match. A hard fought Ladies ‘B’ final saw Maria Donkers and Michele Thomson win the title, edging Marilyn Leasa and Marilyn Holmes 8-6 in the championship match. Sue Zorgdrager and Julie Drake won the Ladies ‘B’ consolation title scoring an 8-2 victory over Deborah Barton and Lucie Stuart-Burton in the final.
The Men’s ‘A’ event saw some exceptional matches. The semifinals included four of the Club’s top doubles teams. Grant McPherson and Jeremy Chisholm put on a dominating display to take out Jason Erb and Wayne Carney 8-3 in their semi, while Bob Tamblyn and Kurt Eickmeier edged Richard Bast and John Noble 8-7 (7 points to 5 in the tie-breaker) to claim their place in the final. This set up a top notch final, and it did not disappoint. In what was deemed the match of the day McPherson and Chisholm took home the ‘A’ championship with an 8-6 victory. The Men’s ‘A’ consolation title went to Zdenko Andrekovic and Bill White who scored a convincing 8-2 win over Steven Schwartzentruber and Ryan Lay in the title match. The Men’s ‘B’ title went to Steve Fischer and Jagdish Patel who frustrated Christopher Smith and Ryan Murphy on their way to an 8-3 title game win. In the Men’s ‘B’ consolation final Larry Shurrie and Kaden Dench doubled up Peter Opie and Chris Wyatt 8 games to 4 to claim the title.
The Stratford Tennis Club will hold a similar tournament for singles play on Saturday, July 4th.
