The regular season of the Stratford Tennis League was completed this week. Teams were playing for playoff seedings. The playoffs begin next week. The first place team will face the fourth place team in one semifinal, with second and third place teams meeting in the other.
The early game this week saw Auto Motion face off against Sunrise Health Services. The match opened with a split of sets in the Ladies #1 Doubles as Marta Andrekovic and Nancy Rheaume of Sunrise took the first set 6-4, while Johanna Billings and Monica Eickmeyer of Auto Motion won the second set 6-4. Auto Motion swept the Ladies #2 Doubles with Ginny Smith and Jessica Barton downing Nancy Chung and Julie Drake 6-0 6-3.
The Men’s #1 Doubles had Pat McCarroll and Ryan Lay of Auto Motion win the first set 7-5 before Paul Coates and Murray Schiedel of Sunrise rebounded to score a 7-5 victory in the second set. Tom Warnock and Larry Shurrie of Auto Motion defeated Luke McCarroll and Jagdish Patel 6-2 6-4 to win the Men’s #2 Doubles.
Sunrise Health took the Mixed #1 Doubles as Andrekovic and Coates shut out Billings and Pat McCarroll 6-0. The Mixed #2 Doubles also went to Sunrise as Rhe
and Schiedel edged Eickmeyer and Lay 7-6 (7 points to 4 in the tie-breaker). Smith and Warnock won the Mixed #3 Doubles for Auto Motion with a 6-2 victory over Chung and Luke McCarroll. Drake and Patel dominated Barton and Shurrie 6-0 to give the Mixed #4 Doubles to Sunrise.
After a slow start to the season Auto Motion got their game and gear and won their last three match ups. The 7 sets to 5 sets victory moved Auto Motion into third place in the final standings. Sunrise Health slid into fourth place to end the regular season.
The late game was a match up of the top two teams in the standings. Lyric Flowers swept the Ladies #1 Doubles as Nicolle Crowley and Naomi Lange downed Maria Donkers and Sandie Ennett 6-4 6-4. The Ladies #2 Doubles was a split of sets as Erma Weernick and Marilyn Leasa of Donkers won the first set 7-5 and Liz Yundt and Nancy Chung of Lyric Flowers took the second set 7-6 (7 points to 5 in the tie-breaker)
The Men’s #1 Doubles went to Donkers Agri as Grant McPherson and John Noble scored a 6-4 6-4 victory over Richard Bast and Chris Parson. The Men’s #2 Doubles also went to Donkers with Neil Maddock and Ric Oliver downing Phil Lambert and Lanny Hoare 6-3 6-2.
The Mixed Doubles opened with Donkers and McPherson of Donkers taking the #1 match up 6-4 over Crowley and Bast. Donkers took the Mixed #2 Doubles with Ennett and Noble scoring a 6-3 win over Lange and Parson. Weernick and Maddock scored a 6-1 victory over Yundt and Lambert to give the Mixed #3 Doubles to Donkers. Lyric Flowers got on the board in the Mixed #4 Doubles as Chung and Hoare doubled up Leasa and Oliver 6-3.
The 8 sets to 4 sets win for Donkers Agri wasn’t enough to catch Lyric Flowers in the final standings.
The playoffs begin next week. The early game will have first place Lyric Flowers face Sunrise Health Services in the early game. The late game has Donkers Agri taking on Auto Motion.
