The Stratford Tennis Club hosted its annual Super Set Doubles Tournament this past weekend. The Men’s and Ladies doubles event had 18 teams participate. The one set to 8 games format with multiple divisions meant lots of play for all involved.
The Ladies division saw upsets of established teams in the ‘A’ semifinals. Mackenzie Dumais and Nicolle Crowley took out the #2 seeds Johanna Billings and Deb Murphy in their semi to advance to their first final. The other semi had Grace Glosnek and Marilyn Holmes defeat #1 seed, and defending Ladies Doubles Club Champions, Marta Andrekovic and Monica Eickmeyer. The surprise finalists meant a first time champion would be crowned. The final had teenagers Dumais and Crowley continue their stellar play and take the championship with an 8-3 victory.
The Ladies ‘A’ consolation final had the top two seeds face off. Billings and Murphy downed Andrekovic and Eickmeyer 8-5 to claim the title.
The Ladies ‘B’ champions are Rose Dunbar and Janet Bradley who downed Jolanda Vandereijk and Kukiko Yamouchi 8-4 in the final.
The Men’s ‘A’ final had the top seeds Bob Tamblyn and Jason Erb facing the third seeded John Fischer and Steven Schwartzentruber. Tamblyn and Erb had dominated the field on their way to the final but Fischer and Schwartzentruber gave them a tough final. Eventually Tamblyn and Erb put them away taking the championship 8-4.
The Men’s ‘A’ consolation final was a thriller. Jim Wilson and Murray Schiedel edged Pat McCarroll and Greg Malarzewski in a tie breaker, winning the title 8-7 (7 points to 4 in the tie breaker)
The Men’s ‘B’ champions are Ryan Lay and Jared Larder who took out Wayne Carney and Mark Boyle 8-5 in the title match.
