The match of the the night was the Ladies ‘A’ Doubles final. Krista Plociennik, who had won the previous 4 Ladies Doubles titles with Claire Scott, partnered this year with Sandie Ennett and advanced to the final by downing teenagers Rileigh Jackson and Kaitlyn Mathieson in the semifinals 6-3 6-0. Marta Andrekovic and daughter Sonja outlasted Johanna Billings and Debbie Murphy in the other semifinal , winning 6-3 2-6 6-1 to book their place in the final. The Championship match went back and forth with each team having moments of control. Eventually the smart and steady play of Marta and Sonja Andrekovic led them to a 6-3 4-6 6-3 victory to claim their first Ladies A Doubles championship. This is Marta’s second Ladies A Doubles title, winning in 2009 with Lori McCabe. For her daughter Sonja it is her first Ladies A Doubles title.
The Ladies B Doubles final had former champions, with new partners, facing off against each other. Defending champion Marilyn Leasa, who won with Lise Couture last season, was partnered with Marilyn Holmes and advanced to the final by edging Barb Thibeault and Allison Hiller 3-6 6-2 7-5 in their semifinal. The other semifinal saw 5 time former champion Gail Shelton and partner Janet Bradley take out Noella Schiedel and Caryn Scott 6-4 6-0. In an exciting and close final it was Shelton and Bradley who claimed the title , winning 6-4 6-3. This is Shelton’s sixth Ladies B Doubles title, all with different partners. Bradley who is in her first season at the Club is now a Club Champion in her rookie season.
With the defending champions not in the Men’s ‘A’ Doubles it was a wide open event with several legitimate contenders. Last years finalists Shannon Dyke and Spencer Trachsel advanced to their second straight final by downing brothers John and Luke Fischer 6-3 6-4 in their semifinal. Their opponents were 2010 champions John Noble and Richard Bast who took out teenagers Grant McPherson and Travis Hiller 6-3 6-1 in the other semifinal. The close, tense championship match saw Dyke and Trachsel taking the first set 6-4. After falling behind 4-1 in the second set Dyke and Trachsel rallied to win the next 5 games to post a 6-4 6-4 win to claim their first Men’s A Doubles championship. Dyke had won two previous title with Max Besworth, while this is Trachsel’s first Men’s ‘A ‘ championship.
The Men’s ‘B’ Doubles saw Jeremy Chisholm, last years champion with Travis Hiller, and Larry Shurrie take on Pat McCarroll and Kevin Gardner. Chisholm and Shurrie had beaten Ryan Lay and Steven Schwartzentruber 6-1 7-6 (9 points to 7 in the tie breaker) in their semifinal, while McCarroll and Gardner took out Wayne Carney and Stuart Arkett 6-1 7-5 in their semifinal. The close and hard fought championship match saw Chisholm and Shurrie claim the title with a 6-4 6-3 victory.
The Club Championship tournaments continue with the singles events. All finals are scheduled for Wednesday, August 27 with a 7:30 pm start time. Spectators are welcome.
