The Stratford Tennis League semifinals were played this week.
The early game saw first seed Sunrise Health Services go down in flames as Auto Works motored past them with a 10 sets to 2 sets upset. Play began with a split in sets in the #1 Men’s Doubles as Grant McPherson and Pat McCarroll of Auto Works took the first set 7-5 and Paul Coates and Luke Fischer of Sunrise responded with a 7-6 (7 points to 5 in the tie-breaker) win in the second set. The #2 Men’s Doubles went to Auto Works as John Fischer and Stuart Arkett scored a 6-3 6-4 victory over Wayne Carney and Jared Larder.
Auto Works won both #1 Ladies Doubles sets as Johanna Billings and Deb Murphy downed Sandie Ennett and Erma Weernink 6-4 7-6 (7 points to 3 in the tie-breaker). The #2 Ladies Doubles was a split of sets with Ginny Smith and Sandra Hofing of Auto Works taking the first set 6-4 before Marilyn Leasa and Marilyn Holmes scored a 6-4 victory in the second set.
Auto Works were on fire in the Mixed Doubles matches taking all 4 sets. The #1 Mixed Doubles had Billings and McPherson get Auto Works rolling scoring a 6-4 win over Ennett and Coates. Murphy and McCarroll took the #2 Mixed Doubles match for Auto Works with a 6-3 doubling of Weernink and Luke Fischer. Auto Works’ #3 Mixed Doubles team of Smith and John Fischer took down Leasa and Carney 6-4. The sweep was completed when Hofing and Arkett edged Holmes and Larder 7-6 (7 points to 4 in the tie-breaker) in the #4 Mixed Doubles.
The late game also had a dominating performance as Donkers Agri put down Snapd by 9 sets to 3 sets. Donkers’ night began with a sweep of the #1 Men’s Doubles as Richard Bast and John Noble scored a 6-2 6-3 win over Chris Parson and Murray Schiedel. Larry Shurrie and Mike Schiedel of Donkers took the #2 Men’s Doubles with a 6-3 7-5 downing of Steven Schwartzentruber and Lanny Hoare.
Donkers continued their sweeps as Linda Doig and Maria Donkers took the #1 Ladies Doubles 6-1 6-1 over Nicolle Crowley and Cox Wensink. Snapd finally got on the board as Monica Eickmeyer and Michele Thomson won the #2 Ladies Doubles 6-1 7-5 over Lindsay Murray and Nancy Chung.
The #1 Mixed Doubles saw Doig and Bast of Donkers defeat Crowley and Parson 6-2. Donkers’ #2 Mixed Doubles team of Donkers and Noble scored a 6-2 victory over Wensink and Murray Schiedel. The #3 Mixed Doubles also went to Donkers as Murray and Shurrie took out Eickmeyer and Schwartzentruber 6-3. Snapd got their only Mixed Doubles victory in the #4 match up as Thomson and Hoare edged Chung and Mike Schiedel 7-5.
The championship matches will be played next week with the ‘A’ final seeing Auto Works face Donkers Agri in the late game. The early game is the ‘B’ championship match up of Sunrise Health Services and Snapd.
